Descending into the DevLearn Expo

Written by Jay Manaloto

DevLearn 2014! Last month, during our local STC Southern Nevada Chapter meeting, I heard about the DevLearn 2014 Conference & Expo for the first time. But the best part? The Expo would be free! The following week, I learned that the event revolves around eLearning technologies and techniques, and the free Expo would take place on October 29 and 30 at the Bellagio, Las Vegas. So I registered! What did I discover at DevLearn? Let’s take a peek.

Bowling at the Brooklyn Bowl

Written by Jay Manaloto

Brooklyn bowling! Just as planned — okay, maybe not quite as planned — the STC Southern Nevada chapter took a break from its monthly sedentary meetings to enjoy a refreshing round of bowling over the weekend. The date: 5:30 pm on Saturday, July 26, 2014. The site: Brooklyn Bowl at the LINQ Las Vegas!

Switching it up with SuperNAPs

Written by Jay Manaloto

Yeah, I admit it, I’m a bit slow with the local technology news in Las Vegas. Maybe it’s the dry heat. :) But recently, when our STC chapter president, Kate, reminded me about her tour of Switch’s data center campus right here in town, I hurried to Switch’s website and was quickly hooked by their mind-boggling “cloud city” facilities, namely the Switch SuperNAPs.

Crossing the Las Vegas Strip

Written by Jay Manaloto

Why did the technical writer cross the road? To visit the user conferences on the other side! Yes, I know, bad joke. But sometimes, to get a taste of the tech world that we document, or the “other side” that lies outside our comfortable cubes and desks, we as writers must take the opportunity to “cross the road”.

Pinball Hall of Fame

Written by Kate Tinklenberg

PinballMachinePlungerOn a rare day off without the kids, my husband and I were looking for something fun and cheap to do for the afternoon. And it had to be inside and out of the summer heat! We had seen Tim Arnold, the owner of the Pinball Hall of Fame, featured on History Channel’s American Restoration a few times and thought we would check it out. It was one of the most enjoyable afternoons we’d spent together and it cost us only the gas to get there and a few quarters we’d never miss.

Get Outside Yourself

Written by Sally White

volunteerAs STC member Lonna White commented, “…sometimes you just need to get outside yourself.” And that’s exactly what members of the STC Southern Nevada Chapter did on Saturday morning, August 17, 2013. For its annual community service event, the group met at a local food bank and picked up bags of fruits, vegetables, and non-perishables to be delivered to those in need throughout the Las Vegas Valley. Two STC teams set off armed with groceries, cell phones, a list of names, and maps. From there on out, it was anyone’s guess as to what could be expected at each stop. The teams traveled to areas they didn’t know existed, into environs completely remote from their own comfortable neighborhoods. Casts of colorful characters were encountered every mile of the way.
